History Making

On the morning after Election Day, how could we not acknowledge this historical moment! This is a moment in history that will be studied by generations to come. We are a part of it. We are witnesses to it. We celebrate the incredible change in US history that marks the election of the first Black President and we are sorrowful that so many states voted to discriminate against gay and lesbian rights to marry or adopt/foster children.

Change is in the air. Change has been the mantra of this election campaign from both sides. Change is needed. The election indicates that people want many things to change whereas in some arenas the change is slow to come. Change does not happen merely by an election. It happens over time as we live into the things we voted for.

African-Americans were given the vote yet many had to fight to get access to the poles. Legislation ended segregation in our schools yet those first students had to endure the hardships of making that change a reality. Now an African-American family will move into what has historically been the “white” house. More than any other President and family, they will live with threats against their lives by the remaining racist elements in our culture in addition to the threats of terrorism against our country. Change was voted on and now we enter this change process, which is not easy especially for those who lead us.

As people of faith, however you voted, let us pray for those in leadership. Let us pray for President-Elect Obama and his family – for safety and for wise leadership in a time of great worldwide and homeland change. Let us pray for discernment as he chooses his Cabinet and key staff members. Let us pray for every Senator and Representative. Let us pray for every Judge and Sherriff (yes and celebrate the win of Lupe Valdez!).

hile we celebrate, there remains much work to do. The changes we want to see for GLBT rights are coming. They may not have passed this election however you know that change is in the air. It is a process. It is an unfinished world and we have an unfinished calling! We need to continue to make change – to make history.

We need to be part of the change we want to see happen. We need to continue to educate and work for civil and economic justice for all. We need to continue to work alongside those who have been elected and to pray for their leadership. We need to not give up on the work for GLBT rights rather continue to raise our voices, especially as people of faith who understand a different Jesus – a Jesus who welcomed all and did not discriminate! As people of faith, let us be guided by our faith to share in the work of bringing this country together. Let us speak kindly with one another regardless of who we voted for. Let us encourage and challenge our elected officials rather than dismiss or demonize them. Work, live, celebrate and let’s continue to make history – a history of justice, inclusion, freedom, liberty, and economic stability for everyone. Change is in the air. Have faith! Keep on loving!

John 15:12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.

John 15: 18-21If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. Remember the words I spoke to you: ‘No servant is greater than their master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the One who sent me.
