The Dream is Still Alive

What a joy to see the day when a Black man was elected President of the United States! Many wondered when this day would come, yet here it is! Excerpts of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech have been played in conjunction with this historic event. I celebrate what was achieved on November 4, 2008!

At the same time, we had a stark reminder of how much work there still is to do. While California, Florida and Arizona voted against gay marriage, Arkansas passed legislation to ban all unmarried cohabiting couples, both opposite-sex and same-sex, from adopting or serving as foster parents. As MCC says we have an “unfinished world” and an “unfinished calling!” So we have to keep “tearing down walls and building up hope.”

The Dream is still alive for that day when ALL God’s children will be seen as equal. Hope is alive as we have seen one major hurdle overcome. While people are disappointed even angry at the results of Proposition 8 and other legislation, we need to realize just how close the votes were. The distance between those for and against has been narrowing! We need to not underestimate the role of religion in opposing GLBT equal rights. Therefore our spiritual voices are needed even more.

It is our ongoing work to “let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!” (Amos 5:24) The Dream is still alive!
