Raise Your Spiritual Voice for Justice
I call upon all GLBT people of faith and our allies to raise our spiritual voices for change and for justice. As people respond to Proposition 8 and the role of the Mormon Church in pushing for this discriminatory legislation and as we respond to sermons and signs on churches such as First Baptist Church Dallas, other voices of faith are needed. Whether you identify as Christian or Jewish or Buddhist or whatever, at the heart of most faith groups is love. In the face of what many experience as unloving acts, voices of love and hope need to be heard.
We can respond with love and respect to both the oppressed and the oppressor while lifting up another perspective. We can provide helpful venues for people to articulate their pain, anger and disappointment. We know the healing value of story telling! We can name injustice without being ugly. We can speak our truth from a centered heart of love. We know the power of truth speaking.
This is not merely political work. This is spiritual work. We are needed to actively partner with political organizers and activists. We are needed to be an example of loving, welcoming, relevant, non-judging spirituality. Let us bring the best of our faith traditions to this work of justice. Let your voice be heard beyond the walls of our churches, temples, synagogues and meeting places.
